Dishwashers are great time savers. To keep yours washing well rinse your dishes before placing them in the dishwasher and a program of preventative maintenance including checking your pump, filters and spray arms can save you trouble in the future. Plugged spray arms are a common complaint. It's important to read and follow your manufacturers instructions and recommendations or call a professional like Stephen Faires at Nova Appliance to check it out for you. One of the simple things you can do is to clean your filter regularly if it's accessible (some machines have self-cleaning filters that you cannot clean) and check the spray arms for plugged holes. To clean them out remove them (check the instructions for info) and wash in your sink using lots of hot water and back flushing them thoroughly to wash any small particles back out of the larger hole and not out of the small holes. If you use liquid dish soap be sure to rinse well in clean water to prevent over sudsing your machine the first time you run it after cleaning the spray arms/filter. If you have any questions, just give us a call or e-mail us.

How to choose a reliable repairman
Canada Day celebrations were great. We took the kids plus a friend down and watched the parade in the morning. Lots of good floats and now we're thinking we'll enter one next year so if you have any suggestions we're all ears. I think it should be a trailer with appliances on it and an automatic bubble blower.
Afternoon found us in the park playing on the swings, at the waterpark, wandering around, watching volleyball, eating mini-donuts and then watching the fireworks. They were great. Not as many as last year I don't think but still amazing! There were some new flower ones I'd not seen before. Then the mad dash to the car and home. Nothing like trying to exit 20,000 people all at once from downtown Parksville. It went pretty smoothly all things considered.
So... now down to business.
How do you choose a repairman?
Many people advertise that they are "reliable, honest, fast, best priced" etc. but in reality they can say anything about themselves and it doesn't make it true does it? So how do you weed out the best?
1. Ask for references, or better yet, ask your friends or someone you trust who they use. They'll give you an unbiased opinion. Word of mouth referrals are the way we get most of our customers here at Nova. We used to be called Electro Services and many of our customers recognize Stephen and ask him for his new business card when we're out in town. Returning customers are the life blood of a company in a small city or town.
2. Call them. Talk to them on the phone. Do you get a confident feeling? Do they sound professional and yet still friendly? That's a good sign.
3. How long have they been in business? If a company has been in business, especially in the same town or city, for a long time, they are obviously good at what they do or they would have been out of business a long time ago. Established businesses are a real benefit to the community because you always know exactly the kind of service you're going to get and you have greater trust for someone you both recognize and have had a good experience with in the past.
4. Do they guarantee their work and parts? You want some kind of a warranty because due to the mechanical nature of parts, they can and do fail sometimes. Appliance technicians know this. A really good company will both guarantee their work and parts, at least for 30 days. The exceptional companies offer longer warranties. At Nova ours is a year. I know that sounds crazy, but honestly we do such good work that we hardly ever have to return to re-fix something. If we do, you know you have only to call us and we'll be right out. It's a way of guaranteeing our customers peace of mind, and that's important to us. And all our warranty info is posted right on our website so you can look at it.
5. Does your repairman take training regularly? Appliances especially have become quite computerized. Now technicians need to be good at plumbing, electrical, refrigeration and computers. It's an ever evolving industry. If your repairman says he doesn't need any more training because he already knows everything...keep looking for a new one.
6. Is your repairman easy to get hold of? Can you leave a message and get it returned within 24 hours? Do they show up if you Google them? Do they have e-mail or a website you can go to for more information? The really good technicians are busy, so they might not be able to call you back the same day but you should expect a call during business hours within a day of your original message. Alternately, looking at their website which will give you other ways to contact them and more of an idea of their services, service areas, warranty info and general business practices. A simple, informative, tidy and current website shows a company that cares about it's 'web using' customers and keeps abreast of the latest technology. The days of the yellow pages are numbered...search engines are being used more and more frequently.
This is just a general idea of ways to weed out the best from the rest, and are my own biased opinion based on my previous experience as a consumer, and as the owner of an appliance repair business. If you have any questions at all, please e-mail me at elizabeth@novaappliance.com
Have a wonderful summer!

Help my fridge is broken!
So here we are in summer finally. Boy that was a long wet spring wasn't it? Now the sun is shining...the birds are singing...and appliances everywhere are getting more use than ever. We're seeing more fridge problems now for various reasons and that's normal at Nova Appliance.
No seriously, your fridge gets opened many more times per day in the summer than the winter. Why you ask? Well, seeking a cool drink is the number 2 reason, and having the kids home from school is #1. Ahh yes, kids..those fridge window shoppers. I often wonder how much power I'd save if I had a clear glass door that they could look through and make their choice before opening the door. Instead they stand there enjoying the cool breeze whilst deciding exactly what it is they want and let out all my cool air. This makes the compressor turn on and re-cool the fridge as we all know. Now it's not as bad as it seems because the temp. inside the goodies stored inside the fridge retain a great deal of their coolness so you're just re-cooling the air again. Not too bad.
But what do you do if your milk goes bad? I mean, you bought it 5 days ago, it shouldn't expire for over a week yet, and it's already curdled. You thought it was just that particular jug but then it happened again.
Your number one culprit is your fridge. How? Remember what I said about your goodies maintaining their cool temperature? If your fridge quits running, they still remain cold because your fridge is a big insulated box. At least for a few days. But milk goes bad quickly and will start to sour at lower temperatures than most other foods so even if your fridge still feels coolish and is say 7 degrees, your milk will go bad.
Or say your fridge seems to be getting warmer yet your icecream in the freezer compartment is frozen as solid as a brick. How does that work? The cold air from your freezer circulates through the fridge keeping it cool. If the damper is having a problem it limits the cold air flow and frosts up your freezer. There are a few other things that will do this as well.
Tip. Have an accurate thermometre handy and pop it in the fridge/freezer. Leave it in the middle of the fridge, not on the door, and check the temp. every few hours to see what's going on. Don't read it for at least 2 hours after putting it in though to allow the internal temp. of the fridge to stabilize. This really helps an appliance technician know what your fridge is doing in it's normal operating cycle.
To prevent spoilage of your food you should call an appliance repair person as soon as you suspect a problem. Leave the fridge plugged in. Some problems can be fixed right away but many require parts to be ordered so the sooner you get on it the sooner you'll be back up and running.
For appliance repair and service in the Oceanside BC area just call or e-mail novaappliance.com and you'll get fast, knowledgeable technical advice with guaranteed estimates and a warranty on service and parts.

Fridges and freezers and ice...oh my!
It's always once the weather warms up that we take notice of our cooling appliances. Especially those with ice makers. The most frequent call we get this time of year is that automatic dispensers are not working. So here's my tip, for free, as I tell my customers. Empty out all the old accumulation of ice cubes. It has a tendency to freeze together in one big lump of cubes that can't move. Allow your freezer to refill the ice and try dispensing cubes or crushed ice again and see what happens. If there's still no ice then give us a call and we'll be out promptly to see what's going on. Remember we're always here if you need us. 250 468-0378
